What Employers Should Review Before Benefits Renewal

By Strata Shield Insurance Solutions · · 5 min read

Renewal is the one moment each year when every assumption behind your benefits program is open for review. Employers who treat it as a paperwork exercise usually accept whatever arrives. Employers who prepare tend to have better conversations — with their broker, their carrier and their employees.

Start with the numbers you already have. Enrollment counts by tier, contribution amounts, and how those have moved over the last two or three years tell you more about your program's trajectory than any single renewal letter.

Then look past the rate. Plan design, network changes, prescription formularies and administrative requirements can all shift at renewal, and any one of them can change the employee experience more than a modest premium adjustment.

Finally, plan the communication. Employees judge a benefits program largely by how clearly it is explained to them. Decide early who will answer questions and how.
